Journal of Mexican Ornithology
HUITZIL is a scientific journal created with the intention of promoting the interchange of information generated about the birds of Mexico and achieving its quick and inexpensive distribution. Its distribution is carried out in electronic format. The numbers in the electronic format can be obtained and printed free of charge through the internet in "Published papers in HUITZIL".
HUITZIL publishes information relevant to Mexican ornithology. This is published in five sections as follows:
• Scientific
• Results of surveys
• New records and range extensions
• Conservation
• Teaching ornithology
The journal also has a News Mailbox. Information of immediate and
temporary interest, such as notices of meetings, appeals for ornithological
information, and available job placements, is distributed in the News Mailbox.
Articles sent to HUITZIL should contain original information
not previously published. Manuscripts will be evaluated by the Editor in Chief,
one Associate Editor, and two invited reviewers. Authors interested in sending
manuscripts to the magazine are invited to read the Editorial Guidelines of HUITZIL.
HUITZIL is a non-profit effort carried out by various ornithologists
active in Mexico. The journal is the scientific informative organ of CIPAMEX -
Birdlife Mexico (International Council for the Preservation of Birds,
Mexico Section), which is, in turn, a member of OSNA (Ornithological Society of
North America).
At the present time, HUITZIL is received electronically by 417
ornithologists who are registered in the Data Base of Ornithologists Working
in Mexico, as well as other interested persons in five countries.
HUITZIL means hummingbird in Nahuatl, one of the native languages
of Mexico. This name was given to the magazine to indicate that the information
published in it will have three of the characteristics of the hummingbirds: it
will be disseminated rapidly (like the movements of those birds), it will be
constant (like the visits that they make to flowers), and it will be of high
quality (like the work of pollinization that several hummingbird species do
for various plants). The logotype of the magazine is the representation of a
hummingbird found in Mayan ruins in the Yucatan region. The Aztecs, another
ancient Mexican people, recognized hummingbirds as skilled and brave fighters.
It attracted the attention of these people that hummingbirds, in spite of their
diminutive size, would challenge animals sometimes hundreds of times their size,
such as predatory birds and mammals. This knowledge permeated the Aztec culture
to such an extent that one of their principal deities received the name of these
small birds: HUITZILOPOCHTLI, the god of war.
Information related to basic and applied science which has been
developed with avian species found in Mexico is published in this section.
Information presented may or may not be experimental. Manuscripts considered
for publication in this section should present results of original research,
novel syntheses of knowledge or thorough revisions of ornithological theories,
methods, or practices.
Information referring to species lists, abundance of avian groups,
and studies of monitoring and population dynamics are published in this section
of the journal.
NEW RECORDS AND RANGE EXTENSIONS SECTION
Information on avian species registered in Mexico which have not previously been reported in the country, or which are rarities, is published in this section. Also, information is presented referring to species' range extensions.
Included here are articles related to the conservation of species, or
having to do with sites important to their conservation (when the manuscripts have
a clear relationship to the avifauna), as well as reports on the use of these
resources by human communities.
Information about techniques and new metods, or significants modifications to they, suggested or developed by the own authors, to teach and spread ornithological practices, are published in that section. Besides, here will be published papers related to mexican ornithological history. General papers about particular subjects will be not published here, because there are other journals or magazines where it can be published in Mexico (e.g., Boletín CUAUHTLI, Revista DUMAC).
HUITZIL is published continuously on the internet. When an
article is accepted, it is published immediately in the "number in process".
In June and December of each year, the "number in process" will be declared a
"closed number" and whereupon a new "number in process" will be declared open.
The list of articles contained in the "closed number" will be sent, via email,
to the ornithologists who are registered in the Database of Ornithologists
Working in Mexico and to those persons who wish to receive it. To receive it,
send a message to
ornitologostrabajandoenmexico@huitzil.net).
Manuscripts already formatted according to the Editorial Guidelines of HUITZIL should be sent via email to editor@huitzil.net. In exceptional cases, where the author definitely does not have access to email, manuscript files will be received on a 3.5 inch diskette sent via normal mail to Dr. Raúl Ortiz-Pulido, CIB-UAEH, A.P. 69, Pachuca, Hidalgo, 42001, México.
